In 1980, after recognizing a local need for a shipping supply distributor, Liz and Dick Uihlein started Uline from their basement. Their first product was the H-101 carton sizer (still offered today). It sold far beyond their expectations and encouraged the Uihleins to add more products to the catalog the following year.

Uline has steadily grown and continues to be a family owned and run business. The product line has expanded to include industrial, packaging, shipping, material handling, retail and janitorial supplies, including over 1,550 shipping box sizes alone. The 750-page Uline catalog reaches businesses nationwide, offering 34,000 products with quick delivery.

Today, with over 6,000 employees in North America, Uline has distribution centers in Chicago, IL; Minneapolis, MN; Allentown, PA; Los Angeles, CA; Atlanta, GA; Dallas, TX and Seattle, WA. We also have international facilities in Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver Canada, along with Mexicali and Monterrey Mexico.

Uline is a drug-free workplace.

Political activity

Uline CEO Richard Uihlein has been a Republican donor for decades, and increased his political giving after Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. Uihlein has supported conservative groups and candidates including Ted Cruz, The Club for Growth, and the Illinois Policy Institute. Uihlein is also a major donor to Americas PAC, Scott Walker, and Bruce Rauner. However, in 2018, Uihlein funded political advertisements harshly critical of Rauner and supporting Jeanne Ives, who ran unsuccessfully in the Republican primary in the 2018 Illinois gubernatorial election, narrowly losing to incumbent Governor Bruce Rauner. Uihlein contributed nearly $1.5 million to Tea Party Patriots in 2016. In May 2016, Donald Trump announced the appointment of Uline president and co-founder Liz Uihlein to the position of national vice-chair for fundraising efforts for his campaign. Richard Uihlein was also the chief financier of Roy Moore in his unsuccessful 2017 US Senate bid.
